The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Funded by the government and with a budget of over 5.1 billion dollars, the primary functions of NCI to diagnose and treat cancer reduce the incidence of cancer and educate the population on the importance of early detection. What sets NCI apart from other treatment centers is the fact that every patient is enrolled in a clinical trial. Because they are participating in clinical trials, all medical care is provided at no cost. NCI provides funding for all transportation, food and lodging. Dr. Raffitt Hassan, who is a medical oncologist, serves as a senior investigator for NCI and has a special focus on mesothelioma. NCI is very beneficial to mesothelioma patients because it provides access to treatments and therapies that are not yet available to the general public.
