Dr. David Sugarbaker is an internationally recognized leader in thoracic surgery and considered one of the foremost experts on pleural mesothelioma. Dr. Sugarbaker received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical School and completed his cardiothoracic training at Toronto General Hospital. He then went to Boston where he founded the International Mesothelioma Program at Brigham and Women’s hospital.
It was here that Dr. Sugarbaker developed the extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) which is a surgery that involves removing the effected lung, a portion of the diaphragm and the linings of the lungs and heart. This has proven to be a very effective treatment in prolonging lives of patients when used in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiation.
Dr. Sugarbaker has recently taken his mesothelioma expertise down south to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where he will be serve as the chief of thoracic surgery of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery.
